From recovery to adventure — and beyond
After a few months of feeling unwell, Sara’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour.
Following a haemorrhage and major brain surgery, she was left unable to walk, with impaired vision and balance, and permanent profound hearing loss.
Recovery was not a straight line. It involved learning to adapt, rebuilding confidence, and discovering what was still possible.
But recovery was never the end of the story.
Discovering what was still possible
Through determination, patience and a willingness to challenge herself, Sara rebuilt her life step by step.
What began as a journey to regain independence evolved into something much bigger — endurance sport, adventure and a passion for helping others find their own possibilities.
From learning to walk again to completing ultra endurance events and leading expeditions, Sara has continually challenged perceptions of what life after serious illness can look like.
From adventurer to medic
Sara’s experiences of adversity, challenge and resilience led her towards a new chapter: medical support and training.
She is a FREC4 Medic, Resuscitation Trainer and Community First Responder, combining medical knowledge with lived experience of operating in challenging environments.
Her approach is practical and people-focused — understanding that every person, team and expedition brings different challenges.
Adventure and expedition
Sara has completed and led a range of endurance challenges and expeditions, including:
- Sahara expedition
- High Atlas / Toubkal expeditions
- Himalayas / Langtang Valley & EBC expeditions
- Wadi Rum challenge
- Land’s End to John o’ Groats
- Ultra endurance events
These experiences have shaped her understanding of preparation, teamwork, risk management and resilience.
Beyond Recovery
Sara is also the founder of The Beyond Recovery Project CIC, supporting people living beyond brain tumour diagnosis and treatment through connection, challenge and adventure.
The project was created from a belief that recovery is not just about what you regain — it is about what you discover along the way.
Today
Today, Sara combines her experience as a medic, adventurer, trainer and advocate to support others through medical training, expedition support, speaking and community work.
Her story is not defined by what happened to her.
It is defined by what she chose to do next.
